So I read this book in 2008 called "Farewell My Subaru", and immediately wanted to live off grid in the mountains. Doug Fine is from a different political flavor than my Libertarian Republican flavor, but nonetheless I find him inspiring in the world of off grid living. Survivalism mentality comes from the hit the countless situations when shit hit the fan and I had to bug out in a quick New York minute, and then spend boring hours that motivated me to keep my ass alive.
Doug Fine has an optimal solar/wind/battery bank set up, which most homesteaders would pay an arm and leg to places like Northern Tool or Ready Made Resources. However, you can always build over time and don't need thousands of dollars to homestead.
